Purpose In Business
I had the incredible opportunity to speak to roughly 100 people at the #1 real estate company in Southern, NV last week! It was really a dream come true for me to deliver an inspirational speech and pour myself into so many. When I started my own personal development journey a decade ago, I thought that one day perhaps I'd have a chance to give a speech like a Jim Rohn/Tony Robbins. That day was last week!
It was a great challenge for me to prepare that speech and deliver it and that excites me! I've decided to pursue more speaking opportunities and to work on my craft. In fact, I'm headed back to Toastmasters today!
Purpose In Business - Gaining Clarity
Through my own pursuit of purpose, discussions with others, and coaching my clients, purpose tends to be elusive, especially in our younger years. It's my hope today to give you a little more clarity on where it originates and the role it plays in our businesses and lives.
Functions Of Purpose
To drive us to take action.
To bring fulfillment.
To help us focus on what really matters.
Two major factors in purpose creation:
Self-Realization
As I assess and get to know my coaching clients, I often find that they feel as though they haven't realized themselves on a level that is acceptable to them personally. They have a deep desire to prove it to themselves and everybody else. They want to gain the respect and acknowledgment of their parents, peers, and society. They desire to live in X neighborhood, drive X car, have X amount of money, and the list goes on and on. This can be a very strong driver in life. I know it gave me tremendous drive for a majority of my youth and I see it in my clients repeatedly. Often I find that people are looking for some grandiose purpose and it eludes them. It's my opinion that chasing self realization can be closely tied to purpose as it can drive you to take action and find motivation to chase down your aspirations. If I'm looking for a new salesperson for my real estate business, I'll be looking for a deep drive and desire to produce and often it's a lack of self-realization.
There's also a fine line where discontentment with self-realization can be defeating. I believe there are times in our lives where we need to give ourselves a hard time to create motivation, but we also must be careful not to cross the line repeatedly where it works against us, instead of for us.
Significance
As middle age approaches and especially for my clients that have achieved a high level of their desired success and self realization, they often shift towards significance. They desire to impact somebody or something else. They'll do it for God, their family, kids, those they lead, charity, society, animals, nature, and on down the line. Significance is exactly why I launched my coaching business. By the way, passion and significance often go hand an hand. If you feel that you have a high calling and you serve that purpose, it's a wonderful place to experience this life.
Now, I don't want you to think that we have to operate in only one category. For example, working on my speaking skills is what I consider self-realization. I desire to be a more dynamic speaker. I'm not satisfied with my public speaking skills today! Ironically, my desire for self-realization in this area feeds right into my pursuit of significance.
Here's where it gets interesting. Often purpose is right in front of our faces. Perhaps you looked for years or decades and it was right there all along! We simply need the ability to perceive it. That's where self-discovery and coaching can be so powerful. With new awareness and mindsets, we can start to see things through a different lens. And that's often what it takes.
Why can purpose be so important?
It supplies intrinsic reasons that spur you to action and it plays a role in your resilience through the valleys that are sure to come. It helps us find motivation and fulfillment within our top values. We feel more aligned to what we were born to do!
Lastly, I submit to you that purpose tends to evolve with time, experience, and personal growth. While the purpose may remain constant, the motivating factors and reasons are honed and evolve to strengthen our purpose.
